Ukraine and Saudi Arabia have forged an air defence agreement, with the former set to share its expertise in countering Iranian-designed drones with the latter. This development comes as Saudi Arabia faces attacks from the same type of drones that Russia has been firing at Ukraine. The deal, signed on Thursday, aims to equip Saudi Arabia with the necessary components of air defence, which it currently lacks. Ukraine has been using a combination of cheap drone interceptors, electronic jamming tools, and anti-aircraft guns to down Russian drones for four years. The country has touted its anti-drone defences as the best in the world.
Ukraine has proposed swapping its interceptors for more expensive air-defence missiles used by Gulf countries to down Iranian drones. The deal is not limited to interceptors alone but involves building a comprehensive air defence system, integrating it with other components, and leveraging Ukrainian experience in its use.
The agreement was reached during President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to Saudi Arabia, where he met with the country's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Zelensky confirmed that both countries had reached an important arrangement on defence cooperation.
The air defence agreement between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia is a significant development in the region's efforts to counter Iranian drone attacks. The deal highlights the expertise of Ukrainian anti-drone experts, who have been deployed to various countries to share their knowledge. This cooperation can be mutually beneficial, with Ukraine gaining access to Saudi Arabia's capabilities and resources. The agreement also underscores the need for countries in the region to work together in the face of common threats. As Ukraine continues to develop its air defence systems, it is likely to play a key role in the region's security landscape.
