A Nigerian national, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been handed a life sentence by a UK court for the murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel in Leicester. The incident occurred on June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road in Leicester, where Ahanonu, 24, launched a fatal attack on Patel after crashing his car.
Ahanonu had been driving erratically around the city centre before the attack, according to Leicestershire Police. Witness accounts and CCTV footage showed him swerving across lanes, running red lights, and putting pedestrians at risk. His vehicle eventually crashed, and he fled the scene on foot.
Patel, who had just alighted from a bus and was walking home, became an unintended victim of the violent attack. Ahanonu attacked her on the street, inflicting severe injuries. Security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary intervened and restrained the suspect until police officers arrived.
Patel died two days later, on June 26, prompting authorities to re-arrest Ahanonu on suspicion of murder. Investigators revealed that Ahanonu had been under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident, and a search of his vehicle uncovered dealer quantities of the drug valued at over £3,000, along with three iPhones.
Ahanonu had earlier pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including dangerous driving, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker after biting a female police officer. Following a trial at Leicester Crown Court, a jury found Ahanonu guilty of murder.
