Nakhchivan Airport Drone Attacks Raise Fears of Regional Spillover
Azerbaijan has been hit by drone attacks, with its security forces claiming to have arrested Iranian agents planning attacks against Israeli interests. The attacks have raised concerns of a regional spillover, as Azerbaijan's close ties with Israel have strained its relationship with Turkey, which has a defence alliance with Baku.
The drone strikes, which targeted Nakhchivan International Airport, have been blamed on Iran, a charge Tehran denies. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has condemned the attack as "terrorism" and warned Tehran of a severe response if the attacks continue. The incident has heightened tensions between Azerbaijan and Iran, with Azerbaijan viewing the drone strikes as a warning over its close ties with Israel.
Baku's close relationship with Israel has also raised concerns among Iran's Azeri minority, who are wary of being caught in the middle of the conflict. Azerbaijan expert Zaur Gasimov notes that the Azeri minority in Iran is a significant number, with around 20-25 million people densely populating two huge provinces. Despite being well integrated into Iranian society, the Azeri minority remains a sensitive issue, with Tehran remaining suspicious of their loyalty.
The incident has also put Turkey in a difficult position, as it seeks to balance its close relationship with Azerbaijan with its growing concerns over Israel's influence in the region. Turkey's defence alliance with Azerbaijan is complicated by its own ties with Israel, which it increasingly views as a threat.
Following the drone attack, Azerbaijani security forces claimed to have arrested Iranian agents planning attacks against Israeli interests, including the Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan crude oil pipeline, which provides around 30 percent of Israel's oil needs.
