President Bola Tinubu has been accused of mishandling the electoral process by Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Adebayo made these remarks in an interview, stating that Tinubu failed to capitalize on the opportunity to reform electoral acts. This comes as a critique of the current state of Nigeria's electoral system.
Adebayo also dismissed plans of merging with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. He argued that the ADC is essentially a branch of the APC, with some members being dissatisfied due to a lack of favoritism. Adebayo emphasized that his primary concern is aligning his political stance with the will of the Nigerian people, the constitution, and the objectives of the country's founding fathers.
The SDP chieftain has been a part of the party since 1991 and has expressed his commitment to its values. Adebayo's comments come as a response to the recent shift of some governors to the APC. He questioned the hypocrisy of politicians who criticize the APC for poaching governors while celebrating lawmakers who join their party.
President Tinubu's handling of electoral reforms is under scrutiny, and rightly so. The fact that Nigeria's electoral system remains imperfect is a testament to the administration's lack of vision. The president's failure to capitalize on the opportunity to reform electoral acts has left the country's democratic process vulnerable. As Adebayo pointed out, the consequences of this inaction are far-reaching, with no state in Nigeria currently safe, secure, or experiencing good employment records. The president's leadership has been called into question, and it is imperative that he takes concrete steps to address these issues.
