Spotify has launched a new feature called SongDNA, which allows Premium subscribers to explore their favorite songs in a more interactive way. The feature, available on both iOS and Android devices, lets users delve deeper into the connections between songs, including who has covered them, samples, and interpolations. This expansion of the existing "About the Song" feature aims to provide users with a more comprehensive understanding of the writers, producers, and collaborators behind their favorite music. As a result, users may discover how artists are connected and influenced by one another's work. The feature could also benefit those in the music industry by helping them find new collaborators, producers, and engineers.
SongDNA has been built on top of data from WhoSampled, an online music database acquired by Spotify last year. The feature competes with TIDAL's interactive credits, which focus on the contributors behind streamed songs. Spotify's Head of Songwriter & Publisher Partnerships, Jacqueline Ankner, noted that SongDNA aims to give songwriters, producers, and rightsholders meaningful recognition for their roles in creating music. The feature is currently available in beta to Premium users globally and is expected to be rolled out to all users by April.
The launch of SongDNA is a significant development in the music streaming space, offering users a more immersive experience and providing new opportunities for collaboration and discovery. While Nigerian music enthusiasts may not be directly impacted by this feature, it highlights the growing importance of data-driven music platforms in shaping the global music landscape. The feature's focus on crediting songwriters, producers, and rightsholders also underscores the need for fair compensation and recognition in the music industry.
