Roku's $3 Howdy streaming service has expanded beyond its own ecosystem, launching on Amazon's Prime Video. This move marks a significant milestone for the company, making its ad-free content available to a broader audience. Howdy, which features a library of nearly 10,000 hours of content from various partners, including Lionsgate, Sony Pictures, and Disney Entertainment, offers users a diverse range of titles, from classic movies to original content. The service is designed to complement, rather than compete with, premium streaming services, allowing users to subscribe to it alongside their Prime Video subscription.
The expansion to Prime Video is not a surprise, given Roku's CEO and founder Anthony Wood's statement at CES in January that Howdy would be coming to other platforms. This move is part of Roku's broader strategy to make great entertainment more accessible, as stated by Gil Fuchsberg, President of Subscriptions, Partnerships, and Corporate Development at Roku. The company's acquisition of Frndly TV in 2025, a streaming service that offers live TV, on-demand video, and cloud-based DVR, also contributed to the development of Howdy.
Roku's success in the streaming market is evident in the popularity of its free, ad-supported streaming service, The Roku Channel, which has over 125 million daily users. The company's fourth-quarter earnings for 2025 also showed a net income of $80.5 million, indicating a growing presence in the industry.
The expansion of Roku's Howdy service to Prime Video is a significant development in the streaming landscape. It highlights the growing competition in the market and the need for streaming services to offer unique value propositions to users. As the demand for streaming services continues to rise in Nigeria, local companies such as Paystack and Flutterwave may need to reassess their strategies to remain competitive.
