The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is bracing itself for a crucial national convention, with a faction aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, set to hold the event in Abuja on Sunday.
The convention, which promises to be a defining moment in the party's history, has attracted the attention of prominent party leaders, including former President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, and former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido.
The faction's National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, has assured that the convention will be credible, transparent, and peaceful. He described the gathering as a reaffirmation of the party's commitment to democratic ideals, due process, and the will of its members.
Mohammed also addressed concerns over an appeal filed at the Supreme Court by the rival faction seeking to validate its November convention. He insisted that his faction was not aware of such an appeal and that there was no court order restraining them from conducting the national convention.
The faction's National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) has reportedly concluded all necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth and successful convention. The process is expected to be inclusive and reflective of the aspirations of members nationwide.
The planned national convention by the PDP faction aligned with Nyesom Wike is a clear indication of the party's internal power struggle. The involvement of prominent party leaders like Dr Bukola Saraki and Alhaji Sule Lamido suggests that the faction is determined to assert its authority within the party. However, the rival faction's appeal at the Supreme Court poses a significant challenge to the legitimacy of the convention. As Nigerians, we must be concerned about the implications of this power struggle on the party's ability to provide effective governance. The PDP's commitment to democratic ideals, due process, and the will of its members is being put to the test. The success of the convention will depend on the ability of the faction to reconcile its differences and work towards a common goal.
