The BBC is set to dramatize the tragic events surrounding the abduction and murder of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old marketing professional who was falsely arrested and killed by a serving police officer in 2021.
The two-part series, currently untitled, will be written by Jeff Pope, the acclaimed scribe behind the film "Philomena." According to Pope, the drama will examine the circumstances that allowed the officer, Wayne Couzens, to remain a Metropolitan Police officer despite multiple complaints and allegations of sexual misconduct.
Couzens, who had just finished working a shift at the U.S. embassy on the night of the murder, had a history of committing sexual offenses. The drama will explore the impact of this horrific crime, the misogyny and failings within the Met Police, and what lessons can be learned from this tragedy.
Lindsay Salt, director of drama at the BBC, emphasizes the unique ability of drama to sensitively tackle real-life subjects. She notes that the series will hold the police to account and ensure that the issues that led to Sarah Everard's murder remain in the public consciousness for years to come.
