Russia is offering scholarships to Nigerian students as part of a new educational partnership between Lagos State and MGIMO University. Ekaterina Alexeevna Shuvalova, deputy vice-rector for Youth Policy, Social Work, and International Relations at MGIMO, disclosed the initiative during a meeting with Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, secretary to the Lagos State government. The collaboration aims to boost research, innovation, and vocational education in Lagos. A memorandum of understanding has already been signed with the University of Lagos to facilitate joint research efforts.
Students studying Russian in Lagos will have opportunities to travel to Russia for language and cultural immersion. Tolani Duke, commissioner for Tertiary Education, said the state is exploring academic exchange programmes in teaching, learning, and innovation. Discussions are expected to include local university vice-chancellors to create structured partnerships. Salu-Hundeyin welcomed the Russian delegation, calling Lagos the "Harvard of Nigeria" and suggesting Yoruba be added to Russian university language curricula.
Mobolaji Ogunlende, commissioner for Youth and Social Development, noted that youth make up 60 percent of Lagos' population and stressed the need to expand international opportunities. The Russian delegation was encouraged to attend the annual European Union Education Fair in Lagos to connect with more students.
Lagos is positioning itself as an academic hub by aligning with foreign institutions like MGIMO University. The claim that Lagos is the "Harvard of Nigeria" reflects growing ambition, but real impact will depend on how many students from diverse backgrounds access these Russian scholarships. If structured well, the partnership could expand opportunities beyond elite circles. Otherwise, it risks benefiting only a select few.
