Russia's drone and missile attack on Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of six people and injured at least 46 others, according to officials. The assault, which was carried out overnight, involved Russia firing nearly 400 long-range drones at Ukraine, marking its biggest attack in weeks. The onslaught continued into Tuesday, with dozens of drones targeting the capital city of Kyiv during daylight hours.
The attack, which was launched from Iranian-designed Shahed drones, hit at least seven cities across Ukraine, including the central city of Dnipro and the western city of Lviv. In Lviv, the attack set fire to the 17th-century St. Andrew's Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Lviv attack also injured 13 people, including three children, and damaged several apartment buildings.
The relentless barrage of attacks has been ongoing since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine over four years ago. Despite U.S.-brokered talks between Moscow and Kyiv, Russia has rejected Ukraine's offer of a ceasefire, and the Iran war has diverted international attention from Ukraine's plight.
As the weather improves, Ukraine's defenders are bracing for a new offensive by Russia's bigger army along the 1,250-kilometer front line snaking along eastern and southern parts of Ukraine.
💡 NaijaBuzz TakeThe ongoing conflict in Ukraine has far-reaching implications for global stability and security. Russia's intensification of attacks on civilian areas is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of war. The international community must continue to pressure Russia to cease its aggression and engage in meaningful dialogue with Ukraine to bring an end to the suffering of innocent civilians.
