Return RUWASA to Water Resources Ministry, Stakeholders Tell Kano Government

Stakeholders at a recent workshop in Kaduna have urged the Kano State Government to transfer the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) back to the State Ministry of Water Resources. The call was made during a four-day review and validation workshop on Kano State's sanitation and water policies. Participants argued that placing RUWASA under the Ministry of Water Resources would improve coordination and strengthen service delivery in rural communities.

The Permanent Secretary of the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Engr. Abdurrazak Haruna, has already captured the recommendation in the revised policy document. He promises to forward the document to the Commissioner for Water Resources for approval once it is submitted. Haruna is committed to ensuring prompt approval and implementation of the revised document across Kano State.

The workshop brought together government officials, development partners, civil society groups, and sector experts to discuss strategies for improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services in Kano State. Team Lead of the WASH Systems for Health Programme at Self Help Africa, Timothy Ibeawuchi, said the workshop aimed to validate two key documents: the Sustainable Basic Sanitation Access Roadmap for Kano State and the Kano State WASH Policy.

The Kano State Government must take concrete steps to transfer RUWASA back to the Ministry of Water Resources, as recommended by stakeholders. This move would improve coordination and strengthen service delivery in rural communities, ultimately benefiting everyday Nigerians. The Permanent Secretary's commitment to ensuring prompt approval and implementation of the revised document is a positive step forward. However, the real test lies in the government's ability to follow through on this promise and deliver tangible results for the people of Kano State.
