There is a familiar proverb that captures Nigeria's current cinema reality. It is like allowing someone else to eat your lunch while you remain hungry. The latest box-office figures from Nigeria's cinema industry reveal an uncomfortable truth that foreign studios are feasting on a market built largely by Nigerian creativity, culture and audience demand. In 2025, two Hollywood giants, Warner Bros. and Disney, together captured more than 60 percent of the Nigerian and Anglophone West African cinema market. Warner Bros. alone generated about N2.26 billion in ticket sales, accounting for roughly 33.8 percent of the market. Disney followed closely with N2.17 billion, or about 32.5 percent.
