Probe ₦5.9bn NNPC rebranding cost, SERAP urges Tinubu
**Order Investigation into ₦5.9bn NNPC Rebranding Cost, SERAP Tells Tinubu**
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to order a probe into the alleged ₦5.9 billion spent on rebranding the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) into the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. The organisation wants the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and anti-corruption agencies to investigate the matter.
In an open letter dated March 14, 2026, SERAP requested President Tinubu to direct the Attorney General and anti-corruption agencies to look into the alleged expenditure. The group asked for full transparency regarding the reported spending.
According to SERAP, the President should also instruct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to identify the officials who approved the payment and the contractors who received the funds. They should also be invited for questioning.
Furthermore, SERAP wants the anti-corruption agencies to examine the procurement process for the project to determine if it followed existing financial regulations and procurement laws. Anyone found responsible for wrongdoing should face prosecution, and any misused public funds should be recovered.
This call for investigation comes at a time when Nigerians are expecting transparency and accountability from the current administration. The rebranding of NNPC was a significant change, and the public has a right to know how the ₦5.9 billion was spent. This is why SERAP is urging President Tinubu to take swift action to ensure that there is no cover-up and that those responsible for any wrongdoing are brought to justice.
In Nigeria, corruption and mismanagement of public funds are major concerns. The country has suffered from the negative impacts of corruption, including poor infrastructure, high inflation, and poverty. Therefore, it is crucial that the government takes concrete steps to address these issues and restore public trust.
By ordering an investigation into the ₦5.9 billion NNPC rebranding cost, President Tinubu can demonstrate his commitment to transparency and accountability. This will also send a strong message to Nigerians that the current administration is serious about fighting corruption and ensuring that public funds are used for the benefit of the people.
Ultimately, the people of Nigeria are watching, and they expect nothing but the truth and accountability from their leaders.
