Privacy Violation: FG Threatens Sanctions Against Content Creators
**FG Warns Content Creators: No More Invasion of Nigerians' Privacy**
In a move to protect Nigerians' rights, the Federal Government has issued a stern warning to content creators who invade the privacy of unsuspecting citizens without permission. This warning comes at a time when social media platforms like TikTok and X are filled with videos and photos of people captured at events and in public places.
According to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), taking pictures and videos of people without their consent is a serious offense that violates their right to informational self-determination. This right is guaranteed under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
The commission's warning is particularly directed at content creators who make a living by capturing people's images at roadsides, markets, and other public places. The NDPC cited a recent case of a content creator in Lagos State who was creating a "reality show" by capturing unsuspecting members of the public without their consent.
The commission made it clear that processing people's images without consent is not acceptable, unless the creator can justify their actions under other lawful bases of data processing. The National Commissioner/CEO of the Commission, Dr Vincent Olatunji, has directed platform owners like TikTok, X, and Meta to step up enforcement of community guidelines to prevent harm to individuals through unlawful and unfair means.
In essence, the Federal Government is sending a strong message to content creators: respect Nigerians' right to privacy and obtain their consent before capturing and sharing their images. This move is seen as a step in the right direction to protect the rights of Nigerians and prevent the abuse of their personal information.
As we navigate the ever-growing world of social media, it's essential to remember that our personal information is sacred and should be treated with respect. The NDPC's warning serves as a reminder to content creators to be mindful of their actions and to always obtain consent before sharing people's images.
