**Metering Momentum: Nigeria's Power Firms Make Strides in Customer Coverage**
As the year 2025 drew to a close, Nigeria's electricity distribution companies recorded a modest yet significant improvement in customer metering, with a national metering rate of 57.27% and 6,966,584 metered customers. This remarkable feat, as revealed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, marks a gradual yet crucial step towards bridging the country's longstanding metering deficit.
In 2025, a total of 677,942 meters were installed, representing a 10.78% year-on-year growth in metered customers. This notable increase is a direct result of sustained efforts by regulatory bodies and distribution companies to address the issue of unmetered customers. In fact, the number of newly metered customers in December alone jumped to 109,556, up from 88,592 in November, indicating a late-year acceleration in meter deployment.
However, despite this progress, over four out of every 10 electricity customers in Nigeria remain unmetered, underscoring the scale of the challenge ahead. The reduction in the number of active customers, from 13.5 million in 2024 to 12.2 million in 2025, presents a complex context for the sector. Nevertheless, the steady growth in metering between November and December 2025, coupled with the 18.51% increase in annual meter installations, is a testament to the sector's resilience and determination to address its metering deficit.
As Nigeria's power sector continues to navigate this trajectory, the regulatory commission's data highlights the significant gaps that persist in achieving universal metering across the country. The sector's gradual progress, driven by regulatory pressure and ongoing initiatives, serves as a reminder of the importance of sustained efforts in addressing the country's energy challenges. With the momentum gained in 2025, Nigeria's power firms are poised to make further strides in customer coverage, paving the way for a more efficient and equitable energy sector.
