Poly workers urge Abiodun to save MAPOLY from bankruptcy
**MAPOLY Workers Call on Abiodun to Rescue Polytechnic from Collapse**
The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to provide urgent financial assistance to the institution, which is on the brink of collapse due to lack of funds.
For decades, MAPOLY has been a beacon of hope for Ogun State and the nation, producing skilled manpower that has driven technological development and economic growth. However, the institution is now struggling to survive due to the state government's inconsistent funding. According to the association, the monthly subvention from the government remains at a paltry ₦20.75m, despite the institution's monthly salary bill of ₦210m.
This meagre funding has forced the management of MAPOLY to rely on dwindling internally generated revenue to meet its operational costs, maintain infrastructure, and support academic programmes. The association has expressed concern that this situation is unsustainable and has placed a huge strain on the institution.
Another pressing issue is the decline in student population, which has further reduced the institution's internally generated revenue. This decline has been attributed to factors such as programme accreditation challenges and increasing competition from other institutions.
The association has urged Governor Abiodun to provide special intervention funds to address the financial challenges facing MAPOLY. They believe that this will enable the institution to function optimally and continue to contribute to the socio-economic growth of the state and the nation.
MAPOLY is not an isolated case. Several polytechnics across the country are facing similar challenges, which has raised concerns about the future of technical education in Nigeria. The association's call for urgent financial assistance from the government is a wake-up call for policymakers to take a closer look at the funding of polytechnics and address the challenges facing these institutions.
