PHOTOS: Abuja–Lokoja Highway standstill over Gwagwalada bridge repairs
Travellers along the Gwagwalada axis of the Abuja–Lokoja highway faced severe traffic congestion on Monday following the closure of one lane on the bridge.
The disruption forced motorists travelling both out of the Federal Capital Territory and into Abuja from Lokoja to spend several hours on the road.
On Monday morning, the National Television Authority reported that many civil servants and schoolchildren resorted to trekking long distances to their offices and schools due to the standstill traffic.
Reacting in a statement on its social media handles, the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the congestion was caused by the ongoing dismantling of the temporary steel fortification on the Gwagwalada Bridge.
The Corps warned road users to maintain lane discipline and drive responsibly, particularly as the Sallah celebration period approaches.
FRSC stated, “Motorists and travelers along the Gwagwalada corridor are advised that the ongoing dismantling of the temporary steel fortification on the Gwagwalada Bridge has led to traffic congestion around the area.
“Road users are urged to exercise patience, remain calm, and cooperate with FRSC personnel and other security agencies deployed to manage traffic. Compliance with directives from officers on duty will help ease congestion and prevent avoidable crashes.
“As the Sallah period approaches, with an expected increase in vehicular movement, motorists are advised to maintain lane discipline, avoid dangerous overtaking, and approach the construction zone with caution.
“Travelers should plan their movement accordingly and drive responsibly to ensure safety for all road users.”
