Former Kano State Deputy Governor Nasiru Gawuna paid a visit to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), at his residence in Kano on Monday.
Gawuna had recently resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and also stepped down as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. His resignation from the mortgage bank took effect immediately, as stated in his letter dated March 27, 2026.
According to Kwankwaso, Gawuna is expected to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after Kwankwaso's official defection to the party on Monday in Kano.
Gawuna had attributed his resignation to a directive from President Bola Tinubu, requiring all political appointees to step down ahead of forthcoming elections. In his resignation letter, Gawuna expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and assured a smooth transition of responsibilities.
Kwankwaso expressed optimism about the future, saying he was looking forward to what lies ahead after meeting with Gawuna at his residence in Kano.
Kwankwaso's meeting with Gawuna serves as a clear indication of the NNPP's growing influence in Kano politics. The fact that Gawuna is expected to join the ADC after Kwankwaso's defection suggests a significant shift in the state's political landscape. This development may signal a new era of coalition politics in Kano, with the NNPP potentially playing a key role in shaping the state's future.
