The Nigeria Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW Nigeria) has called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the harassment and assault of women during the Ozoro Festival in Delta State.
The women were reportedly attacked during the festival, with the National President of BPW Nigeria, Ojobo Atuluku, condemning the incident as a form of gender-based violence.
Atuluku stated that the perpetrators, including organisers, participants, and enablers, should be held accountable under all applicable laws, with independent oversight to prevent any compromise.
She also called for the removal of traditional authorities implicated in the incident and the regulation of cultural festivals to ensure compliance with human rights and public safety standards.
The federation acknowledged the swift action of the Delta State Police Command in making arrests, but emphasized that justice requires more than just arrests, including thorough investigation, transparent prosecution, and consequences for the perpetrators.
Atuluku also highlighted that the incident violates various laws and international obligations, including the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015, and Nigeria's obligations under CEDAW and the Maputo Protocol.
The demand for justice and accountability by the Nigeria Federation of Business and Professional Women is a stark reminder of the need for traditional rulers to take responsibility for their actions and ensure that cultural events do not become platforms for abuse. The swift action of the Delta State Police Command is a welcome development, but it is only the first step towards ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The fact that this incident is not isolated highlights the need for the Federal Government and state governments to enforce all relevant legal frameworks and provide comprehensive support to victims. BPW Nigeria's unwavering solidarity with the victims is a testament to the need for collective action to protect the dignity and safety of Nigerian women.
