Oyo: Suspected thugs unleash attacks as PDP faction stages LG congress

Suspected political thugs on Saturday attacked the residence of a former deputy governor of Oyo state and a leader of the Nyesom Wike faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Hazeem Gbolarumi.
During the attack, valuables worth millions of naira including cars were destroyed at the residence of Gbolarumi in Asi, Ibadan North local government area.
It was learnt that the attack might not be unconnected with the local government congress of the Wike faction of the PDP holding across Oyo state.
Sources said during the attacks at the venues of the congresses in other parts of the state, over 10 persons sustained injuries as PDP factions clashed.
According to sources, the attack by the suspected political thugs was more pronounced in Ibadan North and Ogbomoso areas of Oyo state.
The Oyo state Chairman of the Wike-led faction of the party, Prof Abdulrahman Akinoso, confirmed that the attacks happened in several other places in Oyo state.
Prof Akinoso said, “We have similar experience in Ibadan North, Ogbomoso South, Akinyele and Igboora in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area”.
“At least ten people sustained injuries during the violence, while several vehicles were damaged at various locations across the state.”
Prof Akinoso added, “Our local government congresses were attacked across Oyo state, including Ibadan North, Ogbomoso South, Igboora in Ibarapa Central and Akinyele,” Akinoso said in a telephone interview”.
He stressed that three vehicles were vandalised at Gbolarumi House located on Are Avenue in the Bodija area of Ibadan, the venue where members of the faction had gathered for the exercise.
Oyo state Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, while confirming the attacks in a telephone conversation said the incident on the residence of the former Oyo state deputy governor has nothing to do with the state congress of the party.
“A yet to be identified hoodlums launched attacks on the residence of the former Deputy Governor of Oyo state, Barrister Hazeem Gbolarumi.The coordinated attacks have nothing to do with the state congress”, he said.
DSP Ayanlade added “the matter is being investigated and appropriate action will be taken on the perpetrators.”
