First Lady inaugurates A’Ibom elderly centre, seeks legislation to protect senior citizens
**A New Haven for the Elderly: First Lady Tinubu Inaugurates Akwa Ibom Elderly Centre**
It was a moment of great joy and triumph for the people of Akwa Ibom State as Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, inaugurated a state-of-the-art Geriatric home, the Oluremi Tinubu Senior Citizens Centre, in Ikono Local Government Area. The centre is a beautiful example of what can be achieved when leaders prioritize the welfare of their citizens, particularly the elderly.
During the inauguration ceremony, First Lady Tinubu called on the leadership of the National Assembly to pass a bill that will provide for the welfare of senior citizens across the country. She emphasized that a society that values and respects its elderly is one that understands the importance of responsibility, gratitude, and continuity.
The First Lady was full of praise for Governor Umo Eno's commitment to the welfare of senior citizens in Akwa Ibom State. She noted that his leadership has taken the vision of the late First Lady of the State, Mrs. Patience Umo Eno, to new heights, exceeding even her own expectations. In particular, she commended the governor for expanding his social investment initiative to include monthly stipends for the elderly, a move that aligns with her own proposal for a special economic support package.
The First Lady stressed the need for the federal government to pass a Social Investment Economic Bill that will provide monthly stipends to the elderly as a reward for their contributions to society and to help them cater for their personal needs and family welfare. She also urged other state governors to follow Governor Eno's lead and adopt similar initiatives in their states.
In his remarks, Governor Umo Eno thanked First Lady Tinubu for her visit and for her support for the elderly centre. He described the project as a testament to the leadership and vision of his late wife and expressed his commitment to continuing her legacy.
The Oluremi Tinubu Senior Citizens Centre is a shining example of what can be achieved when leaders prioritize the welfare of their citizens. As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of providing for its elderly population, this centre serves as a beacon of hope for the future.
