Opposition will continue in confusion till 2027 election is over – Akpabio
**Naija Politics: Opposition Parties Still in Disarray - Senator Akpabio**
In a recent event in Uyo, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, made some interesting remarks about the state of Nigeria's opposition parties. According to him, these parties will likely continue to struggle with internal conflicts and disorganisation until the 2027 general elections are over.
Akpabio's comments came during a reception in honour of the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu. He pointed out that the opposition's hasty move to start political activities ahead of the August 26, 2026 deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a clear indication of their internal disarray.
For Akpabio, the opposition's inability to put their house in order is a major weakness. While the ruling party is busy conducting nationwide consultations and mobilisation, opposition groups are still grappling with registration and organisational issues.
The Senator also highlighted the divisions within opposition parties, citing internal leadership disputes. He used the example of the Labour Party, which, despite having millions of votes in the past, is now struggling to attract a mere fraction of that number. According to Akpabio, this is due to the party's fractured leadership, with different factions operating in different parts of the country.
Similarly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a former ruling party, is also facing challenges, with multiple leadership offices and secretaries vying for power in Abuja. This, Akpabio argues, is a clear indication of a party in disarray.
It remains to be seen how these internal conflicts will play out in the run-up to the 2027 elections. One thing is certain, however: with opposition parties still struggling to put their houses in order, the ruling party may have an upper hand in the polls.
