Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo has expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu's re-election chances in 2027, despite opposition from various quarters. The governor made this assertion at the opening of a two-day Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHAs) South-South Zonal Summit in Asaba, Delta State.
The summit, themed "One Party, One Message, One Mobilisation", aimed to expose participants to a deeper understanding of the president's Renewed Hope Agenda. Governor Uzodimma noted that the country had previously operated under a distorted revenue system, multiple exchange rates, and a power sector that consumed revenue without delivering power. He credited President Tinubu with implementing bold transformative reforms, which have led to stabilisation at the macro level and restructuring of the economy.
However, the governor acknowledged that many Nigerians are still feeling the pains of these reforms at the micro level. He charged the RHAs to help bridge the gap between the elite and the grassroots by explaining government policies and programmes to ordinary citizens. Governor Uzodimma described the RHAs as interpreters of the president's vision, translators of policy into everyday language, and a bridge between government performance and citizens' awareness.
President Tinubu's re-election hopes are being bolstered by the likes of Governor Uzodimma, who is convinced that the president's reforms will soon start yielding tangible benefits for Nigerians. However, the governor's assertion that the pains of these reforms are temporary may ring hollow for many ordinary citizens who are still struggling to make ends meet. The fact that food prices are gradually stabilising and the naira is gaining strength is a welcome development, but it remains to be seen whether these gains will trickle down to the masses. Governor Uzodimma's call for the RHAs to bridge the gap between the elite and the grassroots is a laudable one, but it remains to be seen whether this initiative will bear fruit.
