One killed, three seriously injured in Katsina highway auto crashes
**Multiple Auto Crashes Along Katsina Highway Claim One Life, Three Seriously Injured**
A devastating series of auto crashes along the Dayi–Malumfashi road in Katsina State has resulted in the loss of one life and serious injuries to three others. The tragic incidents occurred just hours apart on Sunday, raising concerns about the deplorable state of the highway.
At Ketare junction in Gora, a section of the highway known for its poor condition, a heavy-duty trailer carrying livestock was involved in a fatal crash. The driver claimed that another vehicle attempted to overtake, forcing him to swerve to avoid a head-on collision. Unfortunately, a nearby commercial vehicle, "CARROZZERIA FERRARI," tried to avoid the incident but ended up ramming into the trailer. The driver of the smaller vehicle was killed instantly, while some of the animals being transported also lost their lives.
The second crash occurred just a few hours later near Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Gora, roughly a kilometre from the first accident site. A Honda Accord swerved to avoid a pothole on the highway and collided with an IVECO EuroTrakker truck carrying agricultural produce. The impact was severe, with sacks of produce spilling onto the highway.
The two accidents, which occurred within a short distance of each other, have raised concerns about the state of our highways, particularly in the North. Residents have long complained about the poor condition of the Dayi–Malumfashi road, which has become a death trap for motorists. The situation is exacerbated by the increasing number of vehicles on our highways, coupled with the absence of adequate maintenance and repairs.
The tragic incidents serve as a reminder of the need for urgent action to address the deplorable state of our highways. This includes improving road maintenance, increasing funding for infrastructure development, and enforcing stricter traffic laws to prevent reckless driving.
