Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to protecting autistic children from discrimination. The governor made this promise during a ceremony in Benin to celebrate the achievements of Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, an autistic artist and cyclist who is currently on a mission to raise autism awareness by riding from Enugu to Lagos.
Tagbo-Okeke holds a Guinness World Record for the largest painting, and his determination has not gone unnoticed by the governor. Okpebholo was represented by Commissioner for Information and Communication Prince Kassim Afegbua, who assured parents and guardians of autistic children that the governor would not tolerate any form of discrimination against them.
The governor expressed gratitude to Tagbo-Okeke's parents for nurturing his talent and praised his determination, describing it as an embodiment of the "Edo spirit" of perseverance in the face of adversity. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, also emphasized that autistic individuals are special children who require care and support, rather than stigma or curses.
