Okpebholo, Customs chief urge citizens to sustain Ramadan virtues
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on Nigerians to embrace the values of sacrifice, compassion, tolerance, and selflessness demonstrated during the holy month of Ramadan. In a statement on Friday issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, the governor extended warm felicitations to Muslim faithful in Edo State and across the country on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr, celebrating the successful completion of Ramadan. Okpebholo commended the Muslim community for their devotion, discipline, and spiritual commitment throughout the period of fasting, prayers, and acts of charity. He stressed that the virtues cultivated during Ramadan are essential for fostering a peaceful, united, and prosperous society. “The values of sacrifice, compassion, tolerance, and selflessness exemplified during Ramadan are critical for building harmony and mutual respect among citizens, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences,” the statement read. The governor urged Muslims to sustain these virtues beyond the Ramadan period, promoting coexistence and reinforcing societal unity. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, economic development, and the welfare of all Edo residents, emphasising that collective unity is key to achieving sustainable progress. Okpebholo further called on Edo citizens to use the festive period for prayers for continued peace, stability, and development in the state and across the nation. He added, “Eid-el-Fitr is a time of joy, reflection, and gratitude. Let us celebrate in peace, extend love to one another, and remain steadfast in our shared responsibility to build a better Edo State.” Similarly, the Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, Idiroko, Olukayode Afeni, felicitated with Muslims across Nigeria on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr, marking the conclusion of the 30-day Ramadan fast. In a statement on Friday, Afeni described the holy month as a period for spiritual reflection, self-discipline, prayer, almsgiving, and righteous living. He noted that Eid-el-Fitr serves as a reminder of enduring values such as sacrifice, compassion, tolerance, and generosity, which should be sustained beyond Ramadan. The Customs chief urged Nigerians to uphold peace, unity, and brotherly love—the core teachings of Islam—while calling for active collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service to safeguard the nation’s borders and curb the influx of arms and ammunition. “As we celebrate, I urge all citizens to maintain the virtues of peace, unity, and brotherly love. Let us remain vigilant and committed to protecting our land borders and host communities. Our collective resolve to prevent the influx of arms and ammunition is vital to ensuring a secure environment for all,” Afeni said. He further encouraged cooperation within the professional and academic spheres to foster excellence, mutual respect, and growth. “May this Eid bring you and your families abundant joy, good health, and renewed strength to contribute meaningfully to the development of our Service and the nation at large,” he added.
