Nine people died and 17 were injured in a head-on collision between a Toyota Hummer commercial bus and a trailer on the Kankia-Katsina Road on Saturday. The crash happened at Kwanar Gidan Mutum Daya around 8:03 p.m., according to Shamsudeen Babajo, Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). He confirmed that the accident involved 26 people in total.

Four of the deceased were burnt beyond recognition after the bus caught fire shortly after impact. The injured, suffering fractures, broken limbs and severe cuts, were taken to General Hospital Kankia for treatment. The bodies of the dead were moved to the hospital mortuary.

FRSC personnel from the Kankia Unit Command reached the scene 23 minutes after receiving a distress call. They conducted rescue operations with other emergency agencies. The rescue team cleared the roadblock and restored traffic flow.

Babajo said the Sector Commander expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. Preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash have begun, with findings expected to guide future prevention efforts.

The FRSC urged drivers to avoid speeding, reckless overtaking and dangerous driving, particularly with Eid-el-Kabir approaching. Motorists were advised to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before long trips. Passengers were encouraged to report unsafe driving. The corps reaffirmed its commitment to road safety through patrols, public awareness and enforcement of traffic laws in Katsina State.

The FRSC calls for mechanical checks before long trips, yet the Toyota Hummer bus involved in the fatal crash still operated on a major highway. Four victims were burnt beyond recognition, raising questions about vehicle safety standards and enforcement. If unsafe buses remain on roads during peak travel, warnings alone will not reduce casualties. The same routes will keep delivering bodies to Kankia mortuary.
