Nigeria is set to host the world's largest autism screening event on April 2, 2026, as part of the global celebration of World Autism Day. The event, which will take place across all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, aims to screen hundreds of children for autism. According to Ambassador Uyero Erarawewho, the Global Spokesperson of Sector-Wide-Approach (SWAp) Health Fellows, the screening exercise will be conducted in various locations, including teaching hospitals, community centres, university halls, and government offices.
The event is a collaborative effort between Nigerian health professionals, academics, government officials, and community leaders, who have come together to support autistic Nigerians. This initiative is part of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, led by Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare. The initiative has mobilized over $1.57 billion in financing and revitalized primary healthcare centres across the country.
The screening event is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of Nigerians with autism, with many receiving their first diagnosis and access to therapy and support.
