**Nigeria Gets Ready to Unveil Revolutionary HIV Prevention Drug, Lenacapavir**
In a major breakthrough, the Federal Government has finalized arrangements to introduce Lenacapavir, a groundbreaking HIV prevention medication, into the country. This highly anticipated move is expected to kick-off in March 2026, with consignments of the drug already on their way to Nigeria.
This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's fight against HIV/AIDS. According to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), the country is poised to join the league of nations that have adopted this long-acting HIV prevention option. The phased rollout of Lenacapavir (LEN) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is set to strengthen Nigeria's response to the epidemic.
NACA has been working tirelessly to ensure a seamless introduction of the drug. One of the key successes recorded so far is the regulatory clearance granted by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). This clearance has paved the way for the rollout plan to move forward.
As part of the preparation, NACA has completed assessments in 10 states, evaluating the capacity of healthcare systems and identifying areas that require improvement. The agency has also conducted national and state-level training sessions to equip healthcare workers with the necessary skills to administer and monitor the drug effectively.
To drive awareness and encourage uptake, NACA has developed comprehensive information materials that will be rolled out across the country. The government is optimistic that this new HIV prevention option will improve access and outcomes in the fight against HIV.
The introduction of Lenacapavir is expected to bring a new hope to millions of Nigerians who are at risk of contracting HIV. With its long-acting properties, this medication offers a more convenient and effective way to prevent HIV transmission. As Nigeria takes this bold step, it is evident that the country is committed to strengthening its HIV prevention response and improving the lives of its citizens.
