The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will formally launch its Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee at a ceremony in Abuja, marking the official start of the electoral process ahead of the Executive Committee elections on September 26, 2026, in Lafia. NFF president Ibrahim Gusau will preside over the event at the federation's secretariat. The 12 individuals appointed to the two committees were confirmed during an extraordinary general assembly in Yenagoa on March 23, 2026. Members include Barr Matthew Burkala, SAN; Hon. Justice Aneke; Emmanuel Obafemi; Babagoni Grema; Barr Benjamin Sak; Mallam Musa; Prof. Abdulmalik Awwal; Arinze Anughere, Esq; Hon. Akogun Omole; Abayomi Omoyimi, Esq; Ayibaye Temedie, Esq; and Ayi Ukpayam. The seven-member Electoral Committee will oversee the organisation, conduct and supervision of the elections in accordance with the NFF Electoral Code. It will ensure transparency, fairness and adherence to the federation's statutes during the NFF Congress. The five-person Electoral Appeals Committee will handle disputes and appeals arising from the electoral process, composed of three principal members and two alternates.

Appointing judicial figures like Hon. Justice Aneke and legal experts such as Barr Matthew Burkala, SAN, suggests the NFF is prioritising procedural credibility over political convenience. With Ibrahim Gusau overseeing the inauguration, the federation is attempting to project institutional discipline ahead of a potentially contested election. Given past controversies around football governance in Nigeria, the presence of seasoned legal minds may deter manipulation of the process. Whether this translates to a genuinely open contest depends on how strictly the committees enforce the rules when pressure mounts.
