**Good News for Nigerian Students: NELFUND Extends Loan Application Deadline**
In a boost to the academic aspirations of many Nigerian students, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced an extension of its Student Loan Application Portal. This decision comes on the heels of an overwhelming increase in awareness and demand for the loan scheme, which has been a major talking point across the country.
As part of its ongoing sensitization campaign, NELFUND had initially set a deadline of February 27, 2026, for students to apply for the loan. However, following a surge in applications and inquiries, the Fund has now given itself more time to accommodate students who require additional time to complete their applications. This includes prospective applicants who became aware of the scheme during the recent nationwide sensitization engagements, as well as institutions newly commencing their 2025/2026 academic session.
According to NELFUND's Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, the extension is a testament to the Fund's commitment to inclusivity and equitable access to tertiary education financing. With a significant increase in awareness and participation across the six geopolitical zones, the extension is seen as a necessary step to ensure that all eligible students have a fair and equal opportunity to apply.
To take advantage of this window, students are advised to complete their applications via the official NELFUND portal. Institutions that have not yet commenced the 2025/2026 academic session must also submit an official request for extension, accompanied by their approved academic calendar, for consideration.
The extension is a welcome development, particularly for students who may have been struggling to meet the initial deadline. It's a testament to the Fund's commitment to transparency, accountability, and the delivery of sustainable student financing solutions that remove financial barriers to higher education in Nigeria.
