NDLEA Makes Notable Drug Busts Across Nigeria
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant strides in its fight against drug trafficking, intercepting large consignments of illicit substances and arresting several suspects. The agency's efforts were facilitated by credible intelligence on trans-border criminal activities, which led to coordinated sting operations at various locations across the country.
In one notable operation, NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Strategic Command in Lagos intercepted 237 wraps of cocaine weighing 5.80 kilograms, concealed inside stockfish heads. The consignment was destined for Delhi, India. The agency also arrested a 36-year-old suspect identified as Akputa Dickson Ejike in connection with the seizure.
In another operation, NDLEA operatives intercepted two illicit consignments heading to the United Kingdom, containing methamphetamine and morphine sulphate. The agency also arrested several suspects, including a 46-year-old female drug baron, Omolade Abigail Jolayemi, and a 39-year-old suspect, Anayo Lucky Ohabiro.
The NDLEA's efforts extended beyond Lagos, with operations in Ekiti, Ondo, Benue, Edo, and Taraba States yielding multiple seizures of skunk, codeine-based syrup, and cannabis. The agency also arrested several suspects, including an 80-year-old man, Oke Samuel, who was found with 2.2 kilograms of skunk and methamphetamine.
The recent NDLEA operations demonstrate the agency's commitment to tackling the menace of drug trafficking in Nigeria. The seizure of large consignments of cocaine, methamphetamine, and other illicit substances is a significant blow to international drug cartels operating in the country. The arrest of several suspects, including a 46-year-old female drug baron and an 80-year-old man, highlights the agency's determination to hold accountable those involved in the trade. The NDLEA's efforts are particularly noteworthy in the context of the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign, which aims to reduce drug demand and supply in the country. The agency's commitment to balancing drug supply reduction with demand reduction efforts is a crucial step towards addressing the root causes of drug abuse in Nigeria. The NDLEA's success in intercepting illicit consignments and arresting suspects is a testament to the agency's effectiveness in disrupting the supply chain of illicit substances. As the agency continues to work towards reducing the availability of drugs in the country, it is crucial that the government and other stakeholders support its efforts through adequate funding and resources.
