NBA seeks transformation of legal training
**Nigerian Bar Association Seeks Overhaul of Law School Curriculum** The Legal Education Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for an urgent transformation of law school training in Nigeria. This move comes in the wake of pressing challenges affecting the Nigerian Law School and law faculties across the country, including a backlog of students and funding issues. Recently, the Southwest Regional Townhall Workshop on Legal Education was held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). This event was part of the NBA's efforts to improve legal education and practice in Nigeria. The workshop, which drew a large attendance of over 200 participants, featured presentations from five institutions: UNILAG, LASU, Redeemers University, Fountain University, and Olabisi Onabanjo University. The NBA's President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), had previously inaugurated the Legal Education Committee (NBA-LEC), led by Prof. Damilola Olawuyi (SAN). The committee is tasked with promoting and advancing functional legal education in Nigeria through training sessions and conferences on modern teaching approaches. The workshop aimed to gather perspectives from stakeholders in legal education in the Southwest region on how to produce practice-ready lawyers who can contribute to Nigeria's social and economic development. With this goal in mind, the NBA-LEC plans to host similar workshops in other regions across the country. In Nigeria, where the law school curriculum has been criticized for being outdated, the NBA's call for transformation is particularly timely. If successful, this move could lead to a more modern and effective approach to legal education, ultimately producing better lawyers who are equipped to tackle the challenges facing Nigeria's legal system.
