Lamido: Wike-backed caretaker holds key to PDP reconciliation
**PDP's National Caretaker Committee Holds the Key to Reconciliation - Lamido**
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on the verge of a major reconciliation, and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido believes that the National Caretaker Committee is the key to unlocking this peace. The committee, led by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed and backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, has the recognition of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Lamido, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and one-time National Secretary of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), recently hosted a Ramadan Iftar in his hometown, Bamaina, Jigawa State, where he called for dialogue and compromise among PDP chieftains. He emphasized that if the party does not unite and put its house in order, the time constraints in the Electoral Act may prevent it from preparing properly for elections.
With the INEC timetable looming, parties are expected to hold primaries between April 23 and May 30, and submit electronic registers of their members. However, uncertainty surrounds the reconciliation moves in the party due to the inability of the Wike/Anyanwu group and the Turaki/Makinde faction to break the ice after the Court of Appeal judgment that dismantled the illegal National Working Committee (NWC).
Despite the challenges, Lamido remains optimistic that the National Caretaker Committee can facilitate a peaceful resolution. He believes that a unified PDP is essential for the party's survival and success in future elections.
In a related development, a stalwart and former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has expressed support for the envisaged reconciliation, saying it will foster unity and stability within the party. While the Turaki camp's spokesman, Comrade Ini Ememobong, claims that peace talks have commenced, the Caretaker Committee's spokesman, Jagunda Haruna, disputes this, saying there has been no communication between the two camps.
As the PDP navigates its internal crisis, the National Caretaker Committee's role in facilitating reconciliation will be crucial. With the party's fate hanging in the balance, it remains to be seen whether Lamido's optimism will be rewarded, and the PDP will emerge stronger and more united than ever.
