FIFA fines Nigeria, Congo DR for misconduct during World Cup playoff
**FIFA Imposes Fines on Nigeria and Congo DR over World Cup Qualifier Misconduct**
In a recent disciplinary move, the global football governing body, FIFA, has penalized both Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo for their fans' unruly behavior during their 2026 World Cup qualifier continental playoff match. The Super Eagles of Nigeria lost the match to Congo DR 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the game ended 1-1 in extra time.
The chaos that erupted during the match, which took place in Kinshasa, the capital city of Congo DR, resulted in both teams being sanctioned by FIFA. The Nigerian fans were found guilty of breaching Article 17.2.b of FIFA's disciplinary code by engaging in disorderly conduct, throwing objects onto the pitch, and disrupting the order of the game.
On the other hand, the fans of Congo DR were charged under Article 17.2.c for using laser pointers to distract Nigerian players during the match. The Congolese team, which won the game, has since qualified for the intercontinental playoff in Mexico later this month to determine the final two teams that will participate in the 2026 World Cup.
The sanctions imposed by FIFA include a fine of 1,000 Swiss Francs for Nigeria and 5,000 Swiss Francs for Congo DR. While some of FIFA's disciplinary decisions can be appealed, it is unclear at this time if the cases involving Nigeria and Congo DR are eligible for appeal.
Interestingly, Nigeria had also filed a petition against Congo DR, alleging that they used ineligible players during the playoff match. However, FIFA has yet to make a statement on this matter.
As the African nations continue to fight for their spots in the 2026 World Cup, these sanctions serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a positive and respectful atmosphere during football matches.
