Lagos school collapse: Students recall terrifying experience
**Ogba School Collapse: Students Share Terrifying Experience**
A terrifying incident occurred at Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College in Ogba, Lagos, on Monday, as part of a classroom block collapsed, leaving students and teachers in a state of panic. Although, thankfully, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded, the sudden collapse disrupted activities across the school.
According to eyewitnesses, the building, located on Adudatu Street behind County Hospital in the Aguda area of Ogba, had shown signs of structural weakness prior to the incident and had been marked for demolition. Residents in the area had raised concerns about the building's safety, but unfortunately, their warnings were ignored.
Students who were present at the time of the incident recounted their harrowing experiences. Emmanuel, a student, described hearing a loud cracking sound moments before the structure gave way. "I was in class when I heard a loud cracking sound," he said. "The next thing we saw was dust everywhere. We were out for lunch when it happened. I ran as fast as I could into another classroom block."
Blessing, a 14-year-old student, shared similar sentiments. "I thought it might affect other classrooms, so I ran out of the school compound as fast as I could," she said. "Fear spread quickly among my peers as visibility dropped due to the dust."
The incident highlights the need for regular building inspections and maintenance to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. As a nation, we must prioritize the safety and well-being of our children and ensure that schools are equipped with safe and conducive learning environments.
The Lagos State Government has promised to investigate the incident and take necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences. The school has also been shut down temporarily for a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse.
In conclusion, the Ogba school collapse serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders to take building safety seriously and prioritize the well-being of our children. We hope that this incident will not be in vain and that lessons will be learned to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
