Journalists urged to combat misinformation in AI era
**Journalists, Rise to the Challenge: Combat Misinformation in the Age of AI**
As Nigeria's media landscape continues to evolve, journalists have been urged to take a stronger stance against misinformation and disinformation. At a recent symposium in Lagos, experts emphasized the need for journalists to prioritize fact-checking, accuracy, and ethical reporting in the face of social media's growing influence.
Organized by Open African Tribune, the event titled 'Citizen Journalism in the Age of the Algorithm' highlighted the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, algorithms, and deepfakes. These advancements have created a complex environment where fake news can spread quickly, making it crucial for journalists to remain vigilant.
According to Naakuu Paul-Birabi, Editor-in-Chief of Open African Tribune, journalists must play a key role in combating anti-intellectualism through accurate reporting and fact-checking. He noted that media practitioners have a civic responsibility to address false information and ensure that the public receives reliable information.
Fisayo Soyombo, Founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, also emphasized the importance of upholding ethical standards in journalism. He stressed that news organizations must strengthen their recruitment processes to prevent quackery and ensure that journalists are committed to providing truthful and useful information to the public.
Soyombo's words resonated with many in the Nigerian media industry, where the value of journalism is often measured by fame, virality, or popularity rather than the quality of information provided. However, as the media landscape continues to evolve, it's clear that journalists must adapt to the changing times and prioritize accuracy, fact-checking, and ethical reporting.
In a country where misinformation can have serious consequences, such as spreading false information about COVID-19 vaccines or fueling ethnic tensions, the role of journalists in combatting misinformation has never been more critical. As Nigeria's media industry continues to grow and evolve, it's essential that journalists prioritize their civic responsibility and provide the public with accurate, reliable information.
