Senator Iya Abbas, representing Adamawa Central, has declared his intention to run for governor of Adamawa State in the 2027 election under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He made the announcement on Friday in Yola, positioning himself as a continuity candidate following Governor Ahmadu Fintiri's second and final term. Abbas cited his extensive political experience in the state, including two terms in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, a tenure as Speaker, and current service in the Senate since 2023. He described himself as part of Adamawa's political history and said he was best placed to sustain the peace and development achieved under the current administration. "I am part of the history; we don't want it to stop; we want to continue on that trajectory when our governor leaves," Abbas said. He pledged to improve security, agriculture, health, education and technology if elected, promising subsidised farm inputs and better access to farmlands. Abbas also highlighted his legislative work in the Senate, including bills on education and health. He commended Governor Fintiri for fostering a sense of belonging among residents and vowed to maintain that legacy.
Iya Abbas is banking on familiarity, not fresh ideas, by framing his governorship bid as a seamless extension of Fintiri's rule. His claim of knowing how to "maintain" peace suggests Adamawa's stability hinges more on individuals than institutions — a risky narrative for long-term governance. Nigerians in the state may get continuity, but whether that means progress or stagnation depends on whether they see his record in the Assembly and Senate as transformative. Given that his promises mirror standard campaign language without new policy depth, voters may question what exactly he intends to do differently.
