Victor Boniface has failed to score in 11 Bundesliga appearances for Werder Bremen since joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. The Nigerian forward, a key figure for the Super Eagles, has recorded only two assists before a knee injury in December 2025 sidelined him for months. Surgery followed in January 2026, halting any momentum he might have built. Even prior to the injury, concerns were raised about his physical condition. Sporting director Clemens Fritz confirmed Boniface was placed on a tailored training and nutrition programme to manage his fitness. Now back with Bremen after rehabilitation at Leverkusen, the 24-year-old faces a race against time to contribute as the club fights to avoid relegation.
Head coach Daniel Thioune remains supportive, insisting Boniface can still play a role before the season ends. Fritz echoed that sentiment, stating Boniface's quality is not in question, but his readiness is. Former Werder Bremen striker Aílton Gonçalves da Silva, however, is sceptical. The ex-Brazil international believes Boniface's struggles began upon arrival, citing poor physical shape and the team's weak form as limiting factors. Aílton also highlighted the long absence due to surgery as a major setback. "It will be difficult for him to help Werder with goals because there's not much time left to get back into shape," he said, according to Weser-Kurier.
