Judgment Day for a Taraba Islamic Cleric: 15 Years in Prison for Teenager's Murder

In a Taraba State High Court, a 27-year-old Islamic cleric, Mallam Mubarak Hassan, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of a 16-year-old boy, Mustapha Ishyaku. The gruesome killing took place in Mutum Biyu, Gassol Local Government Area.

The Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Joel Agya, delivered the judgment on March 27, 2026, after a thorough examination of the case. Hassan was found guilty of culpable homicide not punishable by death and sentenced to 15 years in prison without an option of fine. The sentence is to run from March 3, 2022, when Hassan was first arrested by the police.

The case, which began in June 2022, involved allegations of abduction and murder. However, the prosecution failed to prove the kidnapping charge beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the defendant's acquittal on this count.

Justice Agya noted that the prosecution's case relied heavily on weak evidence, including the absence of eyewitnesses and crucial physical evidence. The defense had also raised concerns about the police's investigation, citing various laws and regulations.

Despite the acquittal on the kidnapping charge, the court found Hassan guilty of culpable homicide, albeit with a reduced sentence. This verdict has sparked reactions from the prosecution, with the deputy director of State Prosecution, Mrs Ayiatsipu Johanna, expressing gratitude for the judgment.
