Over 300 American service members have been wounded in the Iran war, with the latest attack on a Saudi air base injuring at least 15 troops, including five seriously. The attack, which was carried out by Iran using six ballistic missiles and 29 drones, has seen a significant increase in the number of wounded troops, with more than two dozen injured this week alone. The Saudi base, which is used by both the Royal Saudi Air Force and US troops, has been targeted several times since the beginning of the war.
The US military has been building up its presence in the region, with a Navy ship carrying over 2,500 Marines arriving in the Middle East. The USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship, has brought transport and strike fighter aircraft, as well as amphibious assault assets to the region. The US has also deployed two other ships, the USS Boxer and two other ships, along with another Marine Expeditionary Unit, from San Diego.
Before the arrival of the Marines, the US military had already built up the largest American force in the region in more than 20 years, including two aircraft carriers, several other warships and some 50,000 troops.
The escalating conflict in the Middle East raises concerns about the economic repercussions of Iran's stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz. With fuel prices soaring and global air travel disrupted, President Donald Trump is under growing pressure to end Iran's chokehold on the strategic waterway. The US military's buildup in the region suggests a willingness to take action, but the question remains whether this will be enough to deter Iran's aggression.
