International Women’s Day: Group calls for action to address inequalities affecting women, girls
**International Women's Day: Time to Take Action Against Inequalities Affecting Nigerians**
Today, March 9, Nigerians join the rest of the world to commemorate International Women's Day (IWD), a day set aside to celebrate the achievements of women and girls while also highlighting the inequalities they face. The event has become a call to action for leaders, communities, and individuals to work together to dismantle barriers that hinder the health, equality, and opportunities of women and girls.
In Nigeria, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is at the forefront of this movement. The organisation, which operates in seven states, including the Federal Capital Territory, is marking IWD with a series of activities aimed at promoting equality and access to healthcare for women and girls.
Unfortunately, despite decades of progress, women and girls in Nigeria continue to face significant challenges. They are disproportionately affected by HIV and other health issues, with limited access to healthcare and reproductive rights. Many women and girls also lack access to affordable menstrual health products and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education, which can undermine their dignity, mobility, and opportunities.
In Nigeria, gender-based violence, income inequality, and barriers to education are all major issues that continue to deepen disparities affecting women. To address these challenges, AHF Nigeria is working with health workers in over 156 healthcare facilities across its states of operation to provide training on the gendered dimensions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This training will equip healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills they need to better support women, particularly those living in rural communities.
This year's IWD activities are a reminder that there is still much work to be done to achieve equality and justice for women and girls in Nigeria. As we celebrate the achievements of women, let us also remember the challenges they face and commit to working together to create a more equitable society for all.
