ICPC seeks advanced forensics to tackle complex fraud
**ICPC Seeks Advanced Forensics to Tackle Complex Fraud in Nigeria**
In a bid to combat the growing complexity of corruption and financial fraud in Nigeria, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has called for strengthened forensic investigation capabilities. The call was made by Mr. Okwudiri Oparaodu, the Secretary of the ICPC, during a two-day capacity-building workshop for the commission's operations personnel.
The workshop, which is sponsored by the Centre for Democracy and Development, aims to equip ICPC investigators with advanced forensic techniques and modern technology to tackle complex financial crimes. According to Oparaodu, the growing sophistication of corrupt practices and financial crimes requires investigators to rely on robust forensic applications to unravel complex cases and build cases that can withstand judicial scrutiny.
"In today's world, the integrity of your investigation depends on the strength of your forensic application," Oparaodu warned. "Any lapses in the forensic chain can jeopardize months of investigative work in court." He urged participants to engage actively in the training and pay close attention to investigative procedures to ensure their findings remain credible, verifiable, and legally defensible.
The ICPC Secretary also expressed gratitude to the Centre for Democracy and Development for sponsoring the programme, which includes both operational and administrative staff. This, he noted, will promote a broader understanding of forensic applications across the Commission and improve its anti-corruption operations.
The workshop is a significant step in the ICPC's efforts to combat corruption and financial fraud in Nigeria. With Nigeria's reputation for corruption and financial crimes, the ICPC's call for strengthened forensic investigation capabilities is timely and necessary. As the Commission continues to work towards a corruption-free Nigeria, the acquisition of advanced forensics will undoubtedly play a critical role in achieving this goal.
