**The Owo Church Attack: A Tale of Arrest and Detention**
In a dramatic turn of events, the trial of five men accused of carrying out the June 5, 2022 attack on the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, has taken a new twist. Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, one of the defendants, has narrated to a Federal High Court in Abuja how he was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). His testimony, which was given in Ebira language and interpreted into English, has shed light on the events that led to his detention.
**A Night of Chaos and Confusion**
According to Omeiza, the night he was arrested was filled with chaos and confusion. He woke up in the early hours of August 1, 2022, to find a group of security agents forcing open the door to his room. They were dressed in black and were covering their faces. Omeiza, who claimed to be an auxiliary nurse, said he was initially unaware of what was happening. He described the scene as one of pandemonium, with the security agents demanding to know about his elder brother, Jamiu.
**Detention and Interrogation**
Omeiza's testimony revealed a harrowing tale of detention and interrogation. The defendants were kept in a room where their personal details were recorded. Omeiza claimed to have volunteered a statement the following day and was held in detention until August 18, 2022. It was during this period that he discovered his elder brother had also been arrested.
**A Shifting Focus**
Omeiza's testimony has raised questions about the way in which the DSS handled the investigation. According to him, the security agents did not mention the Owo Catholic Church attack or any connection to the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) during his initial detention. It was only when he was transferred to the Ondo State DSS office that he was questioned about the attack.
**A Long Road to Justice**
The trial of the five defendants has been ongoing for some time, with the prosecution presenting 11 witnesses before closing its case. The defence has now opened its case, with Omeiza's testimony marking a significant
