In a poignant display of camaraderie and respect, Nigerian Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka led members of the Pyrates Confraternity to pay their final respects to renowned literary scholar Biodun Jeyifo, who passed away on February 11th at the age of 80.
For those who may not know, the Pyrates Confraternity, also known as the National Association of Seadogs (NAS), was founded by Wole Soyinka and six other visionary individuals, affectionately referred to as the "Magnificent Seven" back in 1952 at the University College, Ibadan. This humanitarian organisation has been at the forefront of charity work, advocacy for good governance, and intellectual discourse, making it a beacon of hope for many Nigerians.
Biodun Jeyifo, fondly referred to as "Professor BJ" by his colleagues and students, left an indelible mark on the world of academic scholarship. His extensive research and teaching career took him to esteemed institutions such as Cornell University and Harvard University in the United States, where he cemented his reputation as a leading authority on African literature. His seminal book, "Wole Soyinka: Politics, Poetics and Postcolonialism", published in 2004, earned him global acclaim and won several awards.
In a touching video obtained by a Nigerian newspaper, Wole Soyinka, dressed in traditional attire, led the procession of Pyrates Confraternity members clad in white, red, and black colours, as they rendered solemn songs in tribute to the late scholar. The ceremony took place at the Anglican Cemetery, St James the Great Cathedral Burial Ground, Ijokodo, Ibadan, where Biodun Jeyifo was laid to rest.
As Nigerians mourn the loss of this literary icon, we remember his enduring contributions to the advancement of African thought, scholarship, and intellectual discourse. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of scholars, writers, and thinkers, and his impact on the cultural landscape of our great nation will be felt for years to come.
