HIV Prevention: Nigeria Receives 11,520 Doses Of Breakthrough Injection, Boosts 2030 Elimination Goal
**Nigeria Takes a Giant Leap in HIV Prevention with Groundbreaking Injection**
Nigeria has made a significant stride in its battle against HIV with the arrival of 11,520 doses of lenacapavir, a revolutionary long-acting injectable drug. This innovative treatment is poised to transform HIV prevention and accelerate the nation's progress towards eradicating the disease by 2030.
The consignment was officially received at the Federal Central Stores in Oshodi, Lagos, marking a crucial milestone in expanding Nigeria's HIV prevention arsenal. The delivery is part of a total of 52,000 doses, which will be shipped in three batches, courtesy of the Global Fund.
Nigeria is among nine countries worldwide selected for the early rollout of this groundbreaking injection, underscoring its importance in the global HIV response. According to Pharm. Mohammed Patiko, Head of Procurement and Supply Chain Management at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the delivery is a critical step forward in expanding Nigeria's HIV prevention toolkit.
The lenacapavir injection is specifically designed to reduce HIV infections and will be provided free of charge to eligible clients in eight pilot states. These states include Kwara, Gombe, Ebonyi, and Anambra, which have been supported by the Global Fund. The injection will also be made available to serodiscordant couples, individuals at risk of HIV/AIDS, and key populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM), female sex workers (FSW), and transgender persons.
This development is a major boost to Nigeria's goal of eliminating HIV by 2030. The country's progress in HIV prevention has been significant, with various initiatives and programs aimed at reducing new infections.
