Google Gemini has rolled out new features that enable users to import their chats and data from other AI apps, making it easier for people to switch to the platform. This development is significant because it allows users to retain their chat history and past context, which are crucial components in how a chatbot provides customized answers to each user. The new features cater to both free and paid consumer accounts, giving users more flexibility in managing their data.
The first feature allows users to create a prompt that asks a competitor's AI chatbot to summarize what it has learned about them. This summary can then be pasted into Gemini, providing the platform with a preliminary profile. The profile may include details such as a user's typical written communication style, family members' names, or key preferences. The second feature enables users to import their entire chat history with a different AI assistant into Gemini, allowing them to reference earlier conversations or requests made on a different platform after migrating to Google Gemini.
The introduction of these features comes as Anthropic recently introduced a similar memory import feature. This move by Google may be aimed at attracting users who are dropping OpenAI following its new arrangement with the Department of Defense.
Google's move to import chat history from other AI platforms is a significant step towards making AI chatbots more user-friendly. This development could have implications for Nigerian startups that are developing their own AI-powered chatbots, as it sets a new standard for user experience. Companies like Paystack and Flutterwave, which are already leveraging AI to improve customer support, may need to reassess their strategies to remain competitive.
