Frenchman convicted for spying in Azerbaijan, sentenced to ten years
A French Citizen Sentenced to 10 Years in Azerbaijan for Espionage
A court in Azerbaijan has convicted a French national, Martin Ryan, of spying and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. This development comes amid a backdrop of strained diplomatic relations between France and Azerbaijan, although these tensions have since eased.
Martin Ryan was arrested in Azerbaijan in December 2023 and was tried for collecting sensitive information about Azerbaijan's military cooperation with Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan, as well as allegedly helping to recruit French-speaking Azerbaijanis to work with French intelligence.
Ryan was accused of arranging for an Azerbaijani citizen, Azad Mammadli, to meet with French intelligence agents. Mammadli, who was also tried for treason, received a 12-year prison sentence. Ryan maintained his innocence throughout the trial, stating that he had unknowingly established contacts with embassy employees and should have reported this to the authorities.
France has denied any involvement in espionage activities and claims that Ryan was caught up in the diplomatic tensions between France and Azerbaijan. The French government has assured that it is working to secure Ryan's release.
It is worth noting that the strained diplomatic relations between France and Azerbaijan were partly due to France's support for Armenia. Azerbaijan has been at odds with Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, and France's decision to supply arms to Yerevan further strained relations.
This case has highlighted the complexities of international diplomacy and the risks faced by individuals caught in the middle of these tensions.
