The federal government opened the completed dualized section of the Enugu–Onitsha expressway to traffic on Thursday. The 22-kilometre stretch, linking Onitsha to Ugwuoba, was commissioned by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu. Shettima stated that the project would ease congestion and improve connectivity between Anambra and Enugu states. The road, part of the larger Lagos–Mombasa Trans-African Highway network, had suffered years of delays before completion. Shettima also flagged off construction of the remaining segment from Ugwuoba to Enugu, described as more challenging due to its terrain. The contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, handed over the completed section after months of intensive work. Motorists began using the road immediately, with many expressing relief over the end of long delays on the previously potholed route. The federal government described the project as a key infrastructure priority under the current administration.
Vice President Kashim Shettima presiding over the commissioning underscores the administration's focus on visible infrastructure milestones. The completed 22-kilometre stretch from Onitsha to Ugwuoba will reduce travel time between two major commercial hubs, offering immediate relief to traders and commuters. However, the remaining segment through hilly terrain presents a steeper logistical and financial challenge. Given the years of neglect before work resumed, completion of the full route will need sustained oversight to avoid past delays.
