The Federal Government has announced plans to collaborate with the Cross River State Government to standardise and sanitise the mining sector. This partnership aims to enhance safety and oversight in the extractive industry. Mrs Ememobong Essien, the Operational Head of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), disclosed that effective monitoring of mining operations is crucial for the growth of the extractive industry.
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials are often unearthed during mineral exploration and require specialised handling to prevent health risks. The NNRA will deploy all available resources to ensure that safe and standard practices are strictly enforced. The agency's mandate is to regulate all activities involving ionising radiation.
The Cross River State Government has expressed its commitment to sanitising the mining sector. Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mr Effiom-Ekaha Otu, assured the Federal Government of the state's full cooperation in sanitising the sector to ensure greater productivity. The state government prioritises the protection of the ecosystem and human population from hazardous substances that emerge through unregulated mining practices.
The state government has also committed to the mandatory profiling of all mining entities. This initiative aims to document and identify their operational status for peace and security within the sector.
The Federal Government's partnership with Cross River State to sanitise the mining sector is a welcome development. However, it is imperative that the government follows through on its commitments to ensure the sector is properly regulated. The NNRA's role in regulating activities involving ionising radiation is crucial in preventing health risks associated with mining operations. The state government's commitment to profiling mining entities is also a step in the right direction. As the sector grows, it is essential that the government prioritises the protection of the environment and human population.
